Kelly Clarkson has a song on her new album, Stronger, called Breaking Your Own Heart. I absolutely adore it. Because her vocals are, of course, amazing but also because the words are so true for my life. It's about how you long for love, to experience it, to give it and receive it, to have it for yourself. Yet even while you're hopefully for love, the fear of rejection and pain are much greater than that hope. So you push people away, you sabotage your own relationships, you end things before they go too far. You claim that you're protecting yourself, that you're keeping yourself from getting hurt, that people will only let you down anyways...but in reality, you're hurting yourself, you're breaking your own heart by not allowing people to love you. And that my friends, is half of the story of my life.
Here are the full lyrics:
Shaking your head like it's all wrongBefore you're here, you're already goneAnd even with the light all around youYou're all alone in the darkYou're breaking your own heartTaking it too far down a lonely roadYou say you just want loveBut when it's close enough you just let it goThe very thing you've been the most afraid ofYou've been doing it from the startBreaking your own heartToo many tears, too many fallsIt's easier here, behind these wallsBut you don't have to walk in the shadowsWhen life is so hardYou're breaking your own heartTaking it too far down a lonely roadYou say you just want loveBut when it's close enough you just let it goThe very thing you've been the most afraid ofYou've been doing it from the startBreaking your own heartYou're breaking your own heartIt's not too late I'm still right hereIf only you let go of your fearsYou're breaking your own heartTaking your own heart down a lonely roadYou say you just want loveBut when it's close enough you just let it goThe very thing you've been the most afraid ofYou've been doing it from the startBreaking your own heartYou're breaking your own heart
